James Corden, co-creator and star of the BBC’s Gavin & Stacey, proposed to his pregnant girlfriend on Christmas Day.
The Sun reports that the actor, known best for playing character ‘Smithy’ in the sitcom, proposed to Julia Carey and set a date for 2012.
“James was down on one knee, it was Christmas Day and there were tears shed,” a source said. “It was magical.”
The couple, who will now start searching for somewhere to host the wedding and planning the details of the big day, were introduced by Corden’s former flatmate Dominic Cooper. The two men starred alongside each other in stage and film versions of ‘The History Boys’ and became firm friends.
Cooper is one of Corden’s many friends told to take four weeks off for his endurance stag do, as reports emerged of Corden’s plans to celebrate leaving single life behind in style.
The couple were said to be holidaying in the Maldives when he popped the question.
A spokeswoman for the comic confirmed the engagement to The Press Association, saying: “They are engaged and are both very happy.”
Writing on his Twitter page, Corden said: “Thanks so much for your kind messages. I feel very lucky indeed.”
It was announced in September that the couple are expecting their first child.
